In celebration of Black History Month please recall the following:
Fox Hills was annexed to Culver City in 1964, at which time it consisted of undeveloped land, riding stables, and a golf course. That land was later developed with apartments, condominiums, and what is now theFox Hills Mall, an indoor shopping center. In 1953, at the age of 65, Jimmie Devoe, PGA finished fifth in the United States Open Championship. In 1959 Mr. Devoe was hired by PGA Professional Harry Bassler as an Assistant at the Fox Hills Country Club. Born in 1888 Mr. Devoe quickly discovered a reverence for the history of golf, its traditions and growing the game to the masses as the owner of his own golf school in a Harlem Drug Store where he taught in the basement. So what you say? Here’s what. Mr. Devoe was elected to PGA Membership at the age of 74. The oldest Member ever elected and he was the first African-American following the PGA of America lifting the Caucasian-only Clause in 1962. He was not concerned with being a racial activist, as he understood, promoted and embraced the etiquette, courtesy and respect golf conveys. And, as the teacher of students, Bill Spiller, Teddy Rhodes, Althea Gibson, Jackie Robinson, Nat King Cole, the Mills Brothers and many more he still had a full lesson book at the time of his death in 1979 at the age of 91. He was inducted in the PGA of America’s Hall of Fame last year. Member2Member Question: What year did Bill Wright, PGA, win the USGA Public Links Championship?
