Message from the President – Part 17

Consider this…

We enjoy a very rich history of golf in Southern California. A history of professionals and events that since the founding of our Section in 1926 has been revered and admired for our leaders and always seen as a beacon for the PGA of America. One such historical figure we are lucky to share with the world of golf is Eddie Merrins. Mr. Merrins is indeed a legend, one of the most respected people the game of golf has ever known. Mr. Merrins, an accomplished junior and amateur player, grew up in Mississippi. Turning Professional in 1957 he played in hundreds of tour events. He provided golf instruction at the famed Merion Golf Club, Westchester Country Club and our Thunderbird Country Club in Palm Springs. In 1962 he became the Head Golf Professional at the Bel-Air Country Club and has been there ever since. For over half a century Mr. Merrins has helped numerous tour players, authored books, made films, had a radio show, taught the Hollywood elite and helped the UCLA Golf Team to national prominence as the 1988 NCAA Champions. Always elegant and always kind, we are lucky to have role models and lucky to have them like Mr. Merrins.
