California Governor’s proposal on new taxes

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has released his new tax proposal. It would apply a 3% sales tax to all services. Yesterday, a joint committee of the senate and assembly revenue and taxation committees held an informational hearing to review the proposal. Pat Moran from Aaron Read & Associates testified in opposition on behalf of the California Alliance for Golf. Several other industries also expressed their concerns. The committee was not terribly excited about making this change. Democrats do not see much to gain because the proposal is designed to be revenue neutral and democrats and republicans are both concerned how it will affect the industries subject to the new tax.

Starkjohann makes history

It took a final round six-under par score of 65 for Chris Starkjohann, PGA of Torrey Pines Gold Club & Outings to claim his third career Section PGA Professional Championship title.  Starkjohann won by a comfortable four strokes over Timothy Parun, PGA of Sail Ho Golf Course.  Hometown PGA favorite Donny Lee, who entered the final round two strokes behind the second-round leader and playing in the final group, shot even par 71 to finish all alone in third place.  Second round co-leader Grant Strobel, PGA of Fairbanks Ranch Country Club finished six shots off the lead and in fourth place.

For Starkjohann, it was his first Section PGA Professional Championship since 2004.  After claiming the Senior Section PGA Professional Championship just one week ago, he becomes the first player in Southern California PGA history to win both championships in the same year.  With his victory, Starkjohann earns a spot in the 2011 PGA Professional National Championship, as well as exemptions into the 2010 Nationwide Tour Soboba Classic and the 2011 PGA Tour Bob Hope Classic.

Thank you to the entire staff of Oakmont Country Club, including General Manager Michael Hyler and Head PGA Professional John Milligan for hosting the event.  A big thank you to all the sponsors who made this event possible, including Eric Andrews and Club Car, Fletcher Pavin and Titleist-Footjoy, Greg Twiggs and LaBarre-Oksnee Insurance, the PGA TOUR, 1st and 10th Tee Energy Bars, Pure Focus energy drink, Mercedes-Benz, and Todd Howerton of Oakley, who provided sunglasses to all competitors and a custom watch for the Champion.
