Neighborhood Golf at the PGA TOUR Humana Challenge

The Southern California PGA Neighborhood Golf program visited the PGA TOUR’s Humana Challenge January 19-22, 2012. SCPGA staff and PGA professionals were on hand to give free lessons to tournament goers using our Birdie Ball inflatable hitting cage and artificial putting greens. The young and old flocked to the lesson area, the lessons sparked interest in a few to become more active in the game. Participants won prizes for hitting a hole-in-one including PGA logoed sports bottles, magnets, and stress reliever golf balls.

Thank you to the following PGA Professionals for volunteering their time: Sharon Fletcher  – Shadow Mountain Golf Club, Barry Clayton – Westin Mission Hills Resort, Charles DeLorey – Indian Canyons Golf Club, John Shelden – Mountain View Country Club, Mike Kingsrud – Orange Whip Representative, Gary Lynk – Tradition Golf Club, Jerry Elwell – Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort, Dave Shackelford – Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort, Jeff Beier – Westin Mission Hills Resort, John Klug – Mission Lakes Country Club, Robert Burke – Unaffiliated, and Tom Anton – College Golf Center.

Thank you also to Kimberly Paige, Merri Daniels, Ryan Branning, Thomas Camaione, and Mallory Prest for their hardwork over the week.

The SCPGA Foundation and Neighborhood Golf are continually looking for opportunities to visit communities with our Birdie Ball hitting cage. The Southern California PGA is dedicated to promoting and growing the game of golf.

Choi wins Club Car Aggregate San Diego, Casagranda earns Farmers Open exemption

Chi Choi, PGA Apprentice at La Mirada Golf Course fired an impressive 68 (-4) to win the Club Car Aggregate – Farmers Insurance Open Qualifying at El Camino Country Club. As an Apprentice, Chi was not eligible to qualify for the Farmers Insurance Open. That meant with only a few groups to score, a large group at 72 (E) were looking at a potential playoff for a spot in a PGA TOUR event. However, Greg Casagranda, PGA (Encinitas Ranch Golf Course) fired a late 71 (-1) and took charge of that race and would eventually claim the Exemption. Greg has played in multiple Farmer’s Insurance Open’s (formerly the Buick Invitational) and will be the Section’s representation again in 2012! Congratulations Greg!

The Section will also be represented in the  Farmers Insurance Open Monday Qualifying on January 23rd back at El Camino Country Club by Brad Stormon, PGA (Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon) and Tim Parun, PGA (Sail Ho Golf Club) who earned exemptions through a four-man playoff at 72 (E). Good luck to all our PGA Professionals competing in this year’s event!

Special thanks to Paul Devine, PGA General Manager and Kurt Krause, PGA Head Golf Professional at El Camino Country Club for their hard work and support of this year’s event!

You can follow along with the progress of all our PGA Professionals at www.pgatour.com and www.scpga.com

Be a Patriot Wingman

“We can’t all be Washingtons, but we can all be patriots.” -Charles F. Browne

Providing for others in a selfless manner is the very nature of military service members. For this reason, Folds of Honor is committed to serving the families of our military heroes. Our vision is for every spouse and dependent of a wounded or fallen service member to have the financial opportunity to pursue higher education. In this manner and with your support, we can present an ongoing tribute to our brave men and women who defend the liberties and peace we daily enjoy. The greatest measure of respect we can bestow upon a fallen hero is to support that soldier’s family, to open our hearts and extend our embrace in the form of an education. Please join us in this most honorable effort.
By becoming a Wingman, you are helping provide much needed funding for scholarships for the children and spouses of heroes who have been killed or disabled in combat. Every Wingman will receive an exclusive decal to proudly display and encourage others to support.
