Liaw and Earlywine take AAA Four-Ball Championship

PGA Director of Golf Mike Pearson (left) with champions Rich Earlywine (center) and Henry Liaw (right)

Henry Liaw of Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon and Rich Earlywine of Oak Quarry Golf Club claim a one shot victory over the team of James Haggard and Derek Weickert of Vellano Country Club at the 2011 AAA Four-Ball Championship. With temperatures in the low 80′s and little wind in Beaumont, Oak Valley Golf Club was for the taking. Oak Valley Golf Club was in great shape and the greens were a real test for the entire field. A big thanks goes out to Mike Pearson, PGA Director of Golf at Oak Valley Golf Club for hosting this year’s event.

The Apprentice Assistant Association (AAA) would not be possible without the tremendous support and sponsorship of Nike Golf. We want to thank Dave Finley of Nike Golf for being the presenter at this year’s AAA Four-Ball Championship. Each participant was able to see and feel first hand what the new technology Nike Golf had to offer, including the new Nike Golf club line, new golf ball, and the 45 day footwear comfort guarantee.

Apprentice 2.0 Boot Camp

The Apprentice 2.0 Boot Camp took place Thursday March 10, 2011 at Green River Golf Club in Corona. With over 40 PGA Apprentices, Assistants, and Members in attendance, this was definitely the biggest draw to a Boot Camp to date.

The Apprentice Boot Camp was developed to help those Apprentices who had questions and needed guidance to get through the PGA PGM program. If you were either in the old program or the new 2.0 program, a little guidance can go a long way in becoming a PGA Member.

Before the Boot Camp got underway on Thursday, all of the participants were treated to lunch and some valuable time to network with other PGA Apprentices, Assistants, and Members. At the conclusion of lunch, PGA Professional and Apprentice Chairman Paul Devine started the program off with introductions. NIKE Golf followed the introductions with a presentation on the “Oven” and insight into the production process of their equipment. A special thanks goes out to David Finley and Ira Berman from Nike Golf for supporting and sponsoring the Apprentice 2.0 Boot Camp. PGA Professional and PGA Employment Consultant Ken Ferrell was next up on the agenda and offered insight and answers to the employment environment within Southern California. PGA Professionals Robin Shelton and Chris Gilley, who are both also on the Apprentice Committee, shared stories, experiences, and offered insights about their journey through PGA program. PGA Apprentices Henry Liaw and Alexandra Tegels were able to shed light and answer the bulk of the questions on the new 2.0 program. The last part of the program was an open forum session, which gave the audience a chance to ask questions to the entire panel. SCPGA Executive Director and PGA Professional Tom Addis III  along with Assistant Executive Director and PGA Apprentice Nikki Gatch were also in attendance and offered valuable expertise and guidance on their experiences going through the PGA program. The day wrapped up with final goodbyes and a special thanks goes out to PGA Professional Art Guevara from Green River Golf Club for hosting this year’s Apprentice 2.0 Boot Camp.

AAA Championship comes down to playoff

Logan Scott of Trump National and Matt Murray of PGA West ended the day tied for 1st place (1-under 70). The players then began a sudden-death playoff to decide the Champion. Both players made great birdies on the 1st playoff hole and on the second, Logan Scott claimed the Championship.

A special thanks goes out to the General Manager Tom Endy, PGA and the entire staff at Rancho San Marcos Golf Course for hosting this year’s Championship.

Liaw scores hole-in-one enroute to AAA Sweeps 4 victory

Henry Liaw, PGA Apprentice, of East Valley Golf Club highlighted his victory at the AAA Sweeps 4 with an ace on the par-3 223-yard third hole.  “I hit a high fade and didn’t know it went into the hole until we reached the green.  The hole was playing downwind, so I decided to ease off of it a little and it turned out well.”  Liaw came off a solid Inland Empire Stroke Play Championship and kept his momentum going.  “The driver was a little off, but my short game was solid.  It also helped that North Ranch was in really good shape, thanks to their staff for hosting us.”

Liaw managed to fire a 5-under par 66 on his way to a 3 stroke margin of victory over Nicholas Sanregret, PGA Apprentice from Montecito Country Club.  Thanks again to Nike Golf for their sponsorship and support of the AAA.
