Becoming a PGA Member

There are two pathways that lead to PGA membership — the PGA PGM Apprentice Program and the PGA Golf Management University Program. While the apprentice and university programs differ in significant ways, both pathways require completion of the same PGA PGM curriculum, work experience, PGA Playing Ability Test, and employment or internship requirements. The courses cover content and activities every PGA Professional should know and be able to demonstrate when they enter the profession as a PGA member.

Southern California takes North-South Cup Matches with strong second day

With 12 points up for grabs during singles matches on the second day of the AAA North/South Cup, the team from Southern California dominated the field, claiming 9.5 of those points.  That put Southern California over the edge and they took the title, with a final score of 16.5 – 7.5.  Congratulations to Southern California for the victory!  Photo gallery to follow.

Murray captures the AAA Championship on 2nd Playoff Hole

Matt Murray of PGA West found himself for the second consecutive year in a playoff for the AAA Championship. This year’s result was much different and Matt took home Championship honors on the 2nd playoff hole over Nathaniel Williams also of PGA West. Both players played outstanding golf in extreme heat at the Classic Club, with both of them firing rounds of 68 (4 under) to be atop the leaderboard after regulation play. The playoff looked like it was going to end on the first hole when Williams’ ball hit a cart path and he found himself with a tough 35 yard pitch over some trees to the green. Murray two-putted the first playoff hole while Williams drained a 20 footer to continue the playoff. On the 2nd playoff hole, Murray hit the green again and had a solid two putt while Williams chipped to 5 feet and lipped out which Murray then claimed the Championship. Blair Harkins of Rolling Hills Country Club ended up taking third place honors with round of 70 (2 under). With temperatues reaching 110 on the golf course, it was definitely going to be a challenge to stay focused and hydrated. The Classic Club was in outstanding shape and the facility could not have looked more like a Tour stop. A big thanks goes out to PGA General Manager Greg Rubino, PGA Director of Golf Brady Wilson, PGA Head Professional Dawson Hess, and the entire staff at the Classic Club for hosting this year’s Championship.

Liaw takes Champion honors at the Inaugural AAA Match Play Championship

The Inaugural AAA Match Play Championship is in the books. The event started with 32 players on June 1st and it has taken over two months to crown Henry Liaw of the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon the AAA Match Play Champion, who was victorious over Stephen Plummer, PGA of Marbella Country Club. The first three rounds were played on courses chosen by the players and the Semi-Finals and Finals took place at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont on August 18. Henry Liaw took out James Haggard of Vellano Country Club in his morning Semi-Final Match with some solid putting coming down the stretch. Up until an errant tee shot by Haggard on the 17th Hole, this Match was too close to call. In Liaw’s afternoon Final Match against Plummer, he carded a 3 under 33 on the front nine to take a 5 up lead going to the back nine. Liaw’s ball striking was impressive and he couldn’t miss a putt. Plummer faltered on the front nine with three straight bogies, however, attempted to make a comeback on the back nine but came up short. Henry Liaw won the Final Match 5 and 4. A big thanks goes out to PGA Director of Golf Mike Pearson & the entire staff at Oak Valley Golf Club for hosting the AAA Match Play Semi-Final and Final Match.

The Apprentice Assistant Association (AAA) would not be possible without the tremendous support and sponsorship of Nike Golf. Please pass along a quick thank you to Rick Gielow (Rick.Gielow@nike.com) of Nike Golf.

Harkins is crowned Champion at the Marbella AAA Event

Blair Harkins of Rolling Hills Country Club took Champion honors over Zeke Salas of Hansem Dam Golf Course by a slim 1 shot. Both players played extremely steady golf at Marbella Country Club, with Harkins carding a 2 under 68 and Salas a 1 under 69. Harkins and Salas were the only players in the field to break par. Marbella Country Club was in outstanding shape and it definitely proved to be a true test of golf for the entire field. A big thanks goes out to PGA Director of Golf Robin Shelton & Assistant Professional Daryl McCombs & the entire staff at Marbella Country Club for hosting this year’s event.

With a total of $440 up for grabs in a Skins game, there was only 1 skin won. Lee Sanudo of Carlsbad Golf Center took home the entire skins money for the day.

The Apprentice Assistant Association (AAA) would not be possible without the tremendous support and sponsorship of Nike Golf. We want to thank Janene Fairchild of Nike Golf for being the presenter at this year’s event. It was great to hear the new ideas and see the new styles Nike Golf  has come up with in their apparel line.
